Illustrator Translation Kit · For translators and localization teams

Translate Adobe Illustrator files and keep the layout

Pull the text from your .ai files, translate it in Trados Studio or any tool that imports XML, and put it back into a clean copy with the fonts, colors, paragraph spacing and line height intact.

Requires Adobe Illustrator on the desktop, Windows or Mac. The kit is a set of Illustrator scripts and does nothing on its own.

  • XMLany CAT tool
  • TradosStudio
  • memoQand Phrase

What it does

The layout survives the translation

The scripts read the artwork, hand your CAT tool clean text, and write the translation back into a copy that looks like the original.

  • Styling preservedFonts, sizes and colors come back exactly, run by run, even where several styles share one text frame.
  • Spacing and line height keptParagraph spacing and the line-height tricks designers use to open gaps between paragraphs are read from the source and restored.
  • Reading orderText is exported artboard by artboard, top to bottom, so the translator reads it in a sensible order.
  • Whole sentences for the memoryHard returns that fall mid-sentence become spaces, so your sentences stay whole and your TM matches better.
  • Originals never touchedFiles open read only. The translation is written to a new, prefixed copy, so the source is always safe.
  • A safety guardIf a file changed after extraction, reinject skips it rather than place text in the wrong frame, and notes it in the log.
  • Batch and recursivePoint it at a folder and it walks every subfolder. Every step writes a per-file log.
  • A diagnostic includedA read-only helper for the rare paragraph that needs a closer look, plus single-file versions for one-off files.

How it works

One round trip, start to finish

  1. Check and count

Preflight flags outlines, missing fonts and hidden text, and the word count prices the job.

  2. Extract the text

Each file gets a matching XML next to it, ready for your CAT tool.

  3. Translate and reinject

Work in Trados or any XML tool, then write the translation into a new copy with the layout kept.

Built for real projects

Your originals are never touched

Every script opens originals read only. The translation goes into a new copy with a prefix such as [ES-LA], so your source files stay exactly as they were.
